INMR1: Integrated Neuromuscular Re-Education, Muscle Energy & Positional Release 1

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Integrated Neuromuscular Re-Education 1 is an introductory hands-on approach to correction of somatic dysfunction, using muscle energy and counterstrain/ positional release. The goals of INMR 1 are to restore normal soft tissue tone and elasticity, relieve pain, improve strength, and optimize performance. Identification and treatment of abnormal neuromuscular tension, muscular restriction and painful tender points is the focus of this course. INMR approach is a synthesis of active and passive approaches to facilitate positive changes in the structure and function of the myofascial and neuromuscular systems. Techniques may be immediately applied in a variety of clinical situations. A must-take course for manual therapists!

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants will be able to:
  1. Discuss the theoretical basis for positional release/ counterstrain (PR) and muscle energy therapy. (MET)
  2. Describe neuromuscular reflexes, the function of the muscle spindle and golgi tendon organs and their effect on muscle tone and function.
  3. Assess the musculoskeletal system using palpation scanning to identify indicator tender or trigger points (TPs).
  4. Identify positions and postures that reduce the sensitivity of indicator TPs to allow spontaneous release of abnormal neuromuscular tone about a joint.
  5. Apply positional release techniques/ counterstrain to position a client to relieve pain in TPs.
  6. Assess mobility of a joint to identify restrictions in anatomical range of motion.
  7. For a restricted joint, apply principles of MET to position a joint to effectively stretch a muscular restriction.
  8. Utilize proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques of contract-relax and hold-relax to increase anatomical range of motion at a restricted joint.
  9. Implement a treatment program using positional release and muscle energy therapy to improve range of motion, flexibility, strength, and to reduce spasm and pain for a variety of clinical conditions.
