MET: Muscle Energy Therapy
|
|
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Muscle Energy Therapy (MET)
is a hands-on approach to improve muscle tone, elasticity, strength, and
performance. Identification and treatment of abnormal neuromuscular tension is
the focus of this course. MET uses active and passive techniques to facilitate
positive changes in the function of the neuromuscular system. Practitioners will
learn how to provide precisely controlled resistance to the active contraction
of a client’s muscles in a specific direction to improve mobility, strength and
function. MET uses principles of reciprocal inhibition and postisometric
relaxation to improve mobility. MET techniques may be immediately applied in a
variety of clinical situations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will be able to:
-
1.
Discuss the theoretical basis for muscle energy therapy. (MET)
-
2.
Describe neuromuscular reflexes, the function of the muscle spindle
and Golgi tendon organs and their effect on muscle tone and function.
-
3.
Describe the indications, contraindications and results of muscle
energy therapy.
-
4.
Apply principles of MET to position a joint to effectively stretch a
muscular restriction.
-
5.
Utilize MET techniques of reciprocal inhibition (RI) and
postisometric relaxation (PIR) to increase range of motion.
-
6.
Integrate MET into a treatment program to improve muscle strength and
flexibility.
